Justification (.. The reason of this site's existance, and why I love Talbain) ..
Throughout the time of this website's existance (almost one-and-a-half years now), I never took the time to actually justify the reason of the site's existance, or my love for CAPCOM's British werewolf. Yes, I know it's blatantly obvious that I like him, and the reason the site is up, is because I like him, but it's more than that, and I've always wanted to elaborate my point. So, I will ..
Ever since I was a kid I have always liked wolves, so werewolves were a natural for me. From movies like The Howling, Teen Wolf, etc .. Specials on the Discovery Channel, the various books written and just about any piece of lore you could think of. It has all fascinated me to no end, and that is why I was hooked the moment I played some game at the arcade called "Darkstalkers."
I had never heard of this game before, until I stumbled across it in the local arcade I used to visit. Before it was closed down, leaving me arcade-less, mind you. Now, I played Street Fighter 2 all the time, it was even the first game I got with my Super Nintendo. Still, I had never heard of Darkstalkers before. Behold! Who was this tucked away with the rest of the awesome supernatural creatures? A werewolf! It could not be! So Talbain was picked, and a legacy of dork-dom was born from it.
Over time my love grew. I'd buy anything related to the Darkstalkers series, my favorite being the strategy guides with the oh-so-lovely character art. This quickly "fell" out of the book, and was plastered across my walls. Memorabilia, which is hard to get where I live, would be cherished like a lost child found. Then I got the internet.
In the year 2000, the year of my graduation from High School, in fact a computer and internet access was my graduation present. Anyway, in 2000 we got this thingy called "The Internet." It was new to me, but I had perused the web on friend's and relative's computers before, so I had a drift of what to do. What was the first thing I did? Look up Jon Talbain stuff, that's what. It was the internet that really made my love for Talbain grow, though. Thanks to the internet I found more out about him, and the rest of the Darkstalkers, that I would have never expected.
In early 2002 I had situated myself firmly in the online community, and even had enough know-how to make a website. So that's exactly what I did. Unfortunately, I never completed it, and the unfinished "Curse of the Moon Project" remained on the back burner until around June of 2002. It was then that I actually put the effort into this website. Made the first layout, started looking high and low for Jon Talbain artwork to added to my already massive collection. Finding sprites of him, which were rare, hard to find and a new hobby to me.
So it brings us to now. Why do I love Talbain so much? It was natural affinity the moment I choose him in Darkstalkers. He's a werewolf, I love werewolves, why not? It goes beyond that, though. He's a great character in the game, and he has an interesting storyline. It may be cliché, but it still has it's own level of originality. Why did I make this website? I made this site because he is a very underappreciated character. I've seen the shrines to Cammy, Chun-Li, Morrigan .. Hell, even Dan, and he was a character that deserved his very own.
I suppose that's why I made this website. I wanted to share my love for the character with everyone else. Since it's creation this site has been well recieved, and has even become a staple of a few other Talbain fans out there, and that was my main goal. Still, in the end it would have never been if I have never picked up that game of Darkstalkers for the first time, and picked this unknown werewolf guy, who had blazing priority, and awesome moves. Long live Talbain, and long live the Darkstalkers games. We may never be blessed with another, but the rich history of the series will live on through it's characters, and the people who love them.
Done with the sappy time-travel,
